Statement of Intent

 Statement of Intent

In my music video product, a long shot is the main filming technique used. This is in an attempt to give equal attention to the background and the foreground and allow continuity within the video. There is still camera movement, with a pan being used at the end of the video for the reveal at the end. This prevents confusion with the passage of time being apparent, which allows the video to accurately portray jumps in time. My video intends to raise awareness for homelessness and send a powerful message about how some people live their lives, as well as promote my band, ‘Wasted Reverie,’ as being a politically charged band. The main character in the video, played by me, will be mouthing the lyrics of the song which will be edited over the footage. Each change in time is marked by a specific transition which removes any potential confusion, with the set designed to match each holiday which is being celebrated. The video is filmed in a church, this gives the video an authentic feel as it is a realistic location for a homeless shelter to be set up. It reflects the somber atmosphere of the video as it is a simple looking building, as a highly decorated building wouldn’t represent the struggles of the people in the shelter. There are 2 different social groups represented, with the workers being of a higher class than the homeless people. These characters are played by members of my family, who were instructed to wear clothes that matched the characters that they would be playing. I paid careful attention to the costume design used in the video as I wanted the clothing to represent the weather attached to each season. My video’s introduction will contain a dark screen with the white text, having a basic opening graphic will prevent giving anything away too early and match the theme as it is bare-bones and raw. The video will start with everyone counting down, reminiscent of the new years countdowns that people are used to. This, combined with the design of the set will deliver the message that the video is taking place on the holidays that are commonly celebrated through the year. However, while the rest of the characters are in a celebratory mood- it is clear that the main character is not- maintaining a melancholic expression.  My video is intended at a young adult audience as it tackles difficult to understand themes and ideas. The main inspiration behind my video is Radiohead’s ‘no surprises,’ in which a man stares melancholic-ally at a camera while mouthing the lyrics to the track. This has been combined with my other inspiration of Easy Life’s ‘nightmares,’ with things occurring behind the main character and to them while they don’t react. These have contributed to my video as they have given me clear inspiration for how to structure and film the video- as well as capture the emotions that I was aiming to capture.
